Resources for members
Over the years the guild has built up an extensive library of books, DVDs and magazines relating to our crafts, which members can borrow free of charge.
We also now have four spinning wheels (two Ashford Traditional, a Louet and an Ashford Joy double treadle with carrying case each with hand carders) a Jumbo flyer and bobbins for use on Traditional wheels, three drum carders each with a different quality of cloth, a blending board, a large ball winder, several rigid heddle looms and kumihimo frames. These can be borrowed by members, free of charge.
My first introduction to the world of spinning, weaving and dyeing came when I attended a one day course on natural dyeing organised by the Warwickshire Museum service.
This led me to experiment with the plants growing in my own garden and then to grow plants especially for dyeing. I soon ran out of undyed yarn and so my husband bought me a drop spindle and a small bag of fleece for my first attempt at spinning.
At a summer demonstration at a local show, I met some Stratford-upon-Avon Guild members and was invited along to the next meeting. I also enrolled at Leamington College for a part-time spinning and weaving course. That was the start of an interesting hobby which is stimulating and in which there is always something new to learn or improve. I have also got to know a lovely group of people and made lots of friends!
